What’s a blog & do you need one?

A blog as defined by the Cambridge Dictionary is:

A regular record of your thoughts, opinions, or experiences that you put on the internet for other people to read

A definition so simple but is often misunderstood or even overlooked by businesses and websites.

A blog can often be quite difficult for us to simply start, as writing may not be a natural skill. However, to write something is better to write nothing at all. Of course the content of blogs must be accurate in information, and engaging to the reader, but to “put pen to paper” or in modern terms, finger to key, can be beneficial for your followers, and the internet.

Beneficial to the internet? Why should you or I care about whether what we write is beneficial to the internet? Well, the answer is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is basically maximising the number of visitors to your website by aiming to appear high on the list of results found on Google.  If you want your website to be found on Google for your particular niche or say industry, a blog is an essential part of SEO. Ranking at the top of Google searches for “keywords” that fit your business or brand are important, as this is free web traffic which can covert to customers – And the cost of that lead? Zero, only the time spent to sit down and write about your thoughts, opinions or experiences.

A blog can also educate your followers, visitors or subscribers on news, upcoming events and who you are. If you’re in the business of making sales, who are your customers more likely to buy from? Someone that they know, like and has a great story to tell – Or somebody that they know nothing about and feel no connection to.

If writing doesn’t appeal to your creative side, then perhaps starting a vlog (video equivalent of a blog) is for you. These can be easily recorded on your phone or camera, and then uploaded to social media. If you’re worried you don’t have the editing skills of a professional, don’t even worry as some of the most successful vlogs are filmed unedited, and in one single sequence.

Tips to writing a successful blog:

  • Make it easy to read, and avoid using chunky paragraphs with too many sentences

  • Use keywords related to your industry or niche to assist with SEO
  • Aim for 1000 words – BlogPros state the most successful blogs average 1149 words.
  • Offer value to your reader – Providing useful, engaging content is key
  • Don’t copy! If you use a piece of information, be sure to reference it in your post

So what do you once you have written your blog? Generally, it goes on your website. The biggest platform for blogs is WordPress. You can also share them on your social media platforms, or send it your email list.

 A content marketing survey stated that blogs will be the most critical factor for marketing success.  This means that in order for us to successfully market our business, product or brand, having a blog will form an essential part in getting customers and clients.
